Asics Gel-1130 vs Gel-Kayano 14: Which Retro Runner Should You Buy?

Asics has had a huge resurgence over the last few years, and two models keep coming up whenever the retro running conversation starts: the Gel-1130 and the Gel-Kayano 14. Both draw on the brand's late-90s and 2000s running archive, both use GEL cushioning, and both work just as well with jeans as they do with joggers. Here's how they actually differ.

Asics Gel-1130

The Gel-1130 takes its shape from the Gel-1000 series and the original Kayano 14, but strips things back into a cleaner, more everyday silhouette. It's built for wear rather than performance running, with a durable, street-ready upper and GEL cushioning underfoot that holds up through long days on your feet. It comes in a huge range of colourways, from muted khaki and steel blue through to bolder blueberry and clay tones, which makes it an easy one to build a rotation around. Browse the full range in our Asics collection, including the Gel-1130 in Khaki and the Gel-1130 in Blueberry.

Asics Gel-Kayano 14

The Gel-Kayano 14 is the more technical of the two — originally a stability running shoe, now more famous for its chunky, layered upper and visible GEL cushioning unit in the heel. It sits slightly bulkier underfoot than the Gel-1130 and leans further into the 'dad shoe' aesthetic that's driven so much of the current trainer market. If you want a trainer with more presence and a busier silhouette, this is the one. Take a look at the Gel-Kayano 14 in Blue/Grey.

Which one should you buy?

If you want something clean and versatile that slots under wide-leg trousers or joggers without shouting for attention, go for the Gel-1130. If you want a chunkier, more technical-looking trainer with more visual detail, the Gel-Kayano 14 is the stronger pick. Either way, both are brand new with original tags when they leave us, and we ship fast across the UK.
